Prescription vs Proscription

It was the first time that I heard about the word proscription, and I thought it was related to people being pulled into the army, i.e. conscription. Apparently it is not. The formal definition is the action of forbidding something, or banning. The ‘pro’ in the word proscription made me think that it was something good or at least within the same intention, but apparently it is not. Forbidding something seems opposite to being pro-something.

In comparison the word prescription means to authoratively recommend something. Wouldn’t the ‘pre’ be more related to something that needs to be done beforehand, i.e. prerequisite? Pre-emptive? Prequel? Apparently not.

These confusions aside, it is concerning that a proscription is done in this age and space. An age where prescription can be easily retrieved from the palm of our hands. Yes, a feeble attempt to link between the two terms, sorry.

Anyways, I hope the proscription comes not to fruition.

Of course it is, don’t answer that. It is a rhetorical question after all, one that sometimes crept around the back of my mind when some anti-green post lays down their fact. Someone once asked me what do I, and everyone in the whole world wants. I answered then, happiness. Everyone wants to be happy. I still think the same now, but my definition of happiness is different. In fact I think everyone’s definition of happiness SHOULD be different. If you’re re-using someone else’s definition, most likely…

  • Upbringing Questions

During a discussion recently on participation of people in study groups, one of the comments was people were ‘disappearing’ during the study session, and not asking questions. While the former is true and some people just click join and do something else, the second got me to think, about why some people don’t (or do)…
