Driving and Being Grateful

I went to a client site today which was around 80km from my house. I normally walked to work so it has been a while since I had to drive to anywhere, for work. I did go to the same site last year but it was with another colleague, who did all the driving. Alas, today I went alone. Previously it took around 40 minutes, when we departed at 7 am, so I thought I would do the same today.

Unfortunately when I departed at 9 am, it was raining heavily and the traffic was bad. Even if it wasn’t raining, I think it would have taken longer still, because traffic is much worse in the late morning, as compared to the early morning. I had not considered that. So I arrived late. After around 60 minutes, I arrived. The traffic added around 20 minutes more.

It was even worse on the way back. It took 1 hour and 30 minutes. And it was very boring, driving slowly through traffic. It’s been a while since I go through jams but I this bring back all the memories. I am reminded by how much time was spent driving I used to do, that made me realise how much I hate it and how lucky I am to have a workplace so close to home.

Sometimes you need to be reminded of hardship, and how far you’ve come, to be able to be grateful.

This is the last module in IRSE examination and composed of mostly questions related to signalling applications, i.e. installations, maintenance, operations and the works related to these. As such, these are the areas that I have the least experience with, either in Malaysia or even more…

  • Political Statement

My wife and I were watching a clip about a parliamentary session, where the politician gave a very vague statement, something like, “We do not condone bad behaviour.” My wife complained that the speaker didn’t answer the question. Of course he didn’t, he’s a politician. He gave a political statement that can be interpreted either…

  • Learning from Accidents

Recently the study group I joined was talking about minor accidents and it was a good exercise to go through these cases reported by Rail Accident and Investigation Branch (RAIB), because these accidents most of the time are caused by similar underlying causes, and in left unchecked, will cause more serious accidents. If we look…

  • Black Friday

Why do they call it Black Friday? I asked chatGPT and its unconvincing answer was that people used to do so much shopping that the police or enforcement said that it was a black day, i.e. it is a bad day to work. The term was then supposedly hijacked by capitalism and applied commercially. Yeah,…
