Holiday and Gratitude
Recently my family and I went on a short holiday and we stayed on a caravan. It was a novel experience for both my family and I, one that I am not too eager to repeat. To be fair, the caravan was better than I expected with steady hot water and view of the sea, but the size was less than I imagined. I have never stayed on one so I couldn’t imagine how less space there was a caravan, as compared to a house. The door for rooms, including bathroom, needed to open outward to accommodate the furniture and equipment. Also when the door is opened, it will partially block the ‘corridor’, so much so that you can only pass through if you move sideways, and being not fat. Fortunately I still pass that.
Another main thing is that there was no dishwasher on the caravan, and since we cook quite a bit, mostly late dinners, there was quite a lot of dishes that needed washing. Except for a short stint in 2022, my house had always been equipped with a dishwasher for the past century, so it was a bit of a chore that we had to do our dishes manually. To add to that, the kitchen tap had that stupid dual adjustment thingy where you need to turn the hot and cold water individually. I guess these kind of taps are cheaper but from my experience washing the dishes, once you adjust the water to your liking, you don’t turn the tap off. So you waste water. So although the taps might be cheaper (CAPEX), the hot water will be wasted in the long run (OPEX).
When I came back from the holiday, the house looked sooo huge. And I almost hugged my dishwasher. My point is, only when I had ‘suffered’ that I realised how fortunate my current life is. Funny how a holiday teach about gratitude.
Thanks for reading.
