How to Keep Going

In doing work and completing a project, that is. Sometimes it gets hard and things don’t seem to progress, that you start to let things slide. You would then lose the momentum, making it even harder to start again. So it is very important to keep going and not stopping. The question is, how to keep going when it gets dull and the results are not showing themselves?

To contradict myself, it would be great to see some results. Get someone to feedback or even write your own feedback. Journaling helps, even simple ones, like “today I wake up early!”. Getting a pat on the back from someone you trust, is good. If nothing else, a marker showing you are keeping the momentum, helps. I use Todoist as my to do list, and recently installed add-on that shows a tiny ✅ when I am on a streak, which helps me in completing tasks.

Secondly, find the goodness in what you do. Some people say to find the fun in your work, or do work that you enjoy, but for me, those are not that strong. If I want to find something fun, I’ll do something fun and it doesn’t need to be beneficial. But which one is more fulfilling; when someone comes to you and telling you have helped them, or feeling fun when doing the job? I guess they are not mutually exclusive, but my point is, it is more rewarding when you know you are (possibly) helping someone. This ties with the first point of getting feedback, but even if there is no clear or real feedback yet, i.e. no one comes to shake your hand and thank you, it still feel good to hypothetically see your work helping others.

Third one, which I have a hard time keeping true to, is publishing your work. This also ties to the second point, where you can’t help people if they don’t know about what you are doing. My problem is however I feel that my work is not that great or not that useful, that it would be interesting or useful to other people. Don’t though. You are not going to create a masterpiece, but if you manage to get just a piece out today, you’re on the way to become a master, one day. Insert relevant proverb here.

Anyways hope this inspires you to keep on going.

Thank you for reading.

Someone once asked me what do I, and everyone in the whole world wants. I answered then, happiness. Everyone wants to be happy. My daughter was doing her homework when she asked, “What is adjective again?”. I know what adjectives are but I struggled to explain. “Is it the one with -ly at the end?” she asked again.
