Nobody Read That
I have been writing documents a bit for my recent project but recently a few of the users of these documents came and asked me about certain things. After a few questions, sometimes my answer would be, “It is in the document.” To be fair, this happened I think only twice but enough to occur to me that people might actually not read what I wrote? I mean that is not surprising for this blog, in the sea of writings in the internet, and with so many AI slops, but this is work related and required.
WordPress asked me to update my website today, right before I wanted to write a post, this post, and I just clicked all the blue highlighted text. Basically all the hyperlinks. Then in a list of items to update, I just click the ‘Select All’ button and pressed update. I think the updates were something about security of the website due to plugins being outdated.
Then I was reminded of how disappointed I was when people didn’t (properly ) read my documents. Yes, I am guilty of it too and I realise that it’s a bit hard to find the time to go through walls of text, when you can do something more interesting. Also, relating back to my colleagues, when I mentioned where the texts or related items are, they went back and easily implemented what was written. It is hard to start something, from reading a set of instructions, compared to finding the details that you needed when you are stuck.
I also think my writings need to be improved, as can be seen from this post. AI helped a lot in me writing concise email but I think they are stilted and feels scripted, but it definitely make for easier reading. Finding the balance, as always, is hard.
Thank you for reading.
