Review of IET Webinar: How Apple Killed Innovation
Reading the title and that the speaker used to work in Motorola, catches my interest to view the recording. The presentation was okay, and the presenter he knows his stuff, especially since he was involved since before I was born, but in the end I don’t really quite get what he wants, or I don’t think what he wants is logical. He wants, I think, for Apple to do ‘innovation’ by designing smartphones to user group and have different designs/segmentation to different market.
I think this is a bit simplistic to ask Apple to cut up their models that made them the leader in the market. His examples which showed how Androids and the Nokias before had wild different designs, might allude to why they did not survive/thrive. I agree with him stating Apple is using iPhone as a cash cow, which I think what you should do when you have a great market share, and no close competition. I think there is nothing wrong with that, ethically, and it is a bit fetching to ask Apple to ‘innovate’ just because they sell a lot. Oh well, what do I know.
Anyways what is more interesting was during the Q&A session. There was the
- The guy who stated an anecdote of SMS, and the guy who was involved in development of SMS was behind him and corrected him!
- There’s the father who had to read his son’s angry questions, but was answered quite too short, and the father didn’t pursue. I am pretty sure his son would have fired a few more retorts.
- There was the time presenter said what he wished smart devices would do, and the audience said it is already possible.
- There was the manufacturer or seller from China, who asked for introduction, while all the while the presentation was slightly insinuating against hardware from the mainland.
As you can see the webinar was quite varied and all in all, a very interesting one! Recommended to watch, although it might not have much specific technical knowledge.
Thank you for reading.
