One that I am still finding myself accepting is how early the day starts in spring or more so in summer. Sunrise is at 5:15 am. Compare that to winter, where subuh doesn’t even start at that same time. It doesn’t help too that BST (British Summer Time) makes the hours move 1 hour forward, so the ‘same time’ in winter is even earlier in summer.

In Malaysia, there is a saying that people who goes back to sleep after subuh is lazy and will cause the blessings to go away but here in summer, it is almost impossible to not go to sleep after subuh. Unless of course you sleep very early, but even that is a problem as the sun sets very late and Isyak is even later (although some rulings/fatwa allow to combine Isyak and Maghrib). So you are left with trying to play catch up with your sleep during the day, which is soook hard since the sun is shining and the birds are singing while the rainbows are bowing (raining?) … okay the rainbows are hyperbole but birds really chirp in summer.

What I am trying to say is that I am learning and accepting that the day is longer in summer/spring and live with it. Sounds simple but it is one of those things that just takes a bit of time to get used to.

Thank you for reading.

It has been almost 4 summers that I am here in the Uk and it seems that every year brings another set of lessons.
